Breakfast at Run, Chinese restaurant, St. Regis HK

Breakfast was served in the Chinese restaurant Run.  There are 3 stations in the 2 ends of the restaurant.  1 serving drinks and a few hot dishes and the other 2 serving cereals, fruits and bread.  There is one choice for Japanese, Chinese, Western main course set.  The waiter recommended to try their Chinese set (as this restaurant received a Michelin star).  So we took a Chinese set and a Japanese set.  There are 3 steamed dim sums - shrimp dumpling, pork dumpling and sticky rice in lotus leaf as well as 1 deep fried dim sum spring roll.  Besides, there was a congee with condiments.  I chose a scallop congee.  The scallop is very fresh but the congee base was in a common mistake.  I often consider some simple basic food like steamed rice and congee which can tell if the restaurant is discerning enough for Chinese food cooking.  The congee was boiled in conducting heat without the fragrant rice flavour.  Supposed congee should be boiled at a "bright" high heat fire without the lid for at least 30 minutes.  The rice would be boiled as a "broken" texture and there goes the rice fragrance.  After that, it should be boiled at medium low heat for another half hour or an hour.  Then low heat for another 20 minutes to get turned in a smooth texture.  Besides, rinsing rice with a few drops of peanut oil would make the rice taste even better.  Put a piece of selected aged dried tangerine peel (soaked in cool water and taking out the white inner part) and some ginkgos would be nice.  The steamed dumplings are quite at average but the sticky rice dumpling is a bit disappointing.  The lotus leaf wasn't soaked and rinsed enough that resulted in a sticky with the rice dumpling and some "wet leaf" odour.  The spring roll (if it's not named as a spring roll) is quite nice when you think about a deep fried wafer shrimp roll.  If you look for something fancy, this is a good place to hang around.  The Japanese set is at average standard.

Takeaway menu by Cuisine Cuisine.

The first choice seems to be a bit too bland as compared to all the others, especially the fifth choice.  It could be much better if they have some mushroom or even tofu to go with just veggie duo.

Takeaway dinner box by Chiu Chow Garden

Many mid. to high end restaurants offer takeaway lunch/dinner box at the price range from HK$60 (Crystal Jade) to $140 (Cuisine Cuisine,國金軒).  This time I tried Chiu Chow Garden (HK$80).  A bit disappointing as the rice was a bit overnight and the bitter gourd with roast pork was a bit too dried and salty.  The better ones were their signature pickled and the veggie.  Tried the other pork stewed in preserved veggie which was still at their standard.

紫粵軒 (Tze Yuet Heen), Crowne Plaza Kowloon East, Tseung Kwan O, HK

The dishes were quite at high price, dim sum at around HK$68-88, a boiled veggie at HK$108 and the steam stir fried rice in lotus leaves at $248.  Fortunately, those were made with some selected ingredients and in good cooking skill.

Man Ho Heen, JW Marriott BKK

All the dishes looked very nice and the dessert was served in dry ice.  One of the things I still don't disagree is water-boiling most of the ingredients making the food lose their original flavour.  The chef of this restaurant made this "water or oil boiling" step even a bit longer.  I find a disgrace to the food.

Lunch set for 10, Chiu Chow Garden, Causeway Bay, HK

This lunch set is actually good for 12 though the dim sum is counted for 10 persons.  There were also a rice and noodle which weren't in the photos below.

Pu Tien restaurant, Marina Square, Singapore

The last time I visited here was 7 years ago and this restaurant hadn't expanded yet.  It was quite a pleasant meal back then.  This time it was but when I checked the bill, I was reminded to give comments on the forum.   It was a bit unnecessary for reminding such when nowadays forums are not anything new.

Shanghai Street restaurant, China Town, Melbourne

My tummy got a bit upset from the heavy greasy food and the rotten coleslaw.  I felt like a hot soup and something steamy hot.  So we ordered a wonton chicken soup, dumplings and a ginger/scallion chicken.  Turned out I had a headache from the heavy MSG.  I rarely have some MSG issue unless it's some heavy use.  I admired the long line of people waiting for a table for this restaurant.

Man Fu Yuan KItchen, Emquartier, BKK

It's a bit risky to try some new Chinese restaurants in Bangkok.  As when we learned about the background of this place, we tried it.  Perhaps we didn't have a high expectation.  It was quite a nice surprise, not just only the common dishes but also the dim sum.  We decided to try their dim sum next time.  The cooking technique and ingredients are quite Singaporean Chinese style (e.g. the black sweet soy sauce and the soy sauce in chili).  Among all, I like their pan fried salty fish pork patty which was mixed with some chopped Chinese celery and water chestnut balancing the salty fish falvour, and yet the salty fish wasn't too overwhelming).

Maxim's Palace City Hall, Central, HK

It has been quite many years I haven't been to this established restaurant.  Supposed a year something ago, I was to bring friends to try their dim sum but didn't make it as it's much too crowded to get a table.  This time we ordered a soup of the day and got much surprised with the large amount and quality fish maw in the soup - at least 6 big ones.  The soup is just HK$58.  A super bargain!
