Sarkies restaurant, Heritage Annex, E&O Penang

There are some people who often claim they don't eat at hotel because it doesn't reflect the local cuisine.  I don't agree to it because we should be more receptive to any places.  Besides, hotel outlets should even care about their food quality in addition to their services.  When I think about this part, I think of MO BKK.

This restaurant in the Heritage Annex impressed me a lot with its nostalgic decoration and ambience. The food is awesome and amazingly at a very low price, e.g. a stir fried noodle at just US$6-8.  So taking all the below 3 dishes plus 2 desserts is just only US$30 net.  BTW, taking a meal at the open food stall outside is about US$30-40.  However, the prawn in this hotel is much bigger, fresher and some fine seasoning.  

Gurney Drive, Penang

While the city has preserved its old town, on the north west coast of George Town, a newly developed area has brought many high rise buildings and some major shopping malls.  Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon are on the seafront.  They may not be as modern as those of BKK, but they offer a wide range of restaurants and shops.

月萍豆芽鷄 (Yuet Ping Bean Sprout Chicken), Penang

The shop's deco and the food presentation drew my attention to promptly give it a try.  I guess it's the best meal I have tried for this kind of local food.  The bean sprout from Ipoh is very sweet and crunchy.  The chicken meat reminds me of the very old days of the Chicken rice by an old madam in China Town of Bangkok - very tender, juicy and rich in chicken meat flavour.  We ordered an extra dish...

Red Garden open food stalls, Penang

This open area food market is quite near the hotel Eastern & Oriental.  Tried their stir fried kuay tew, prawn noodle, spare rib soup, satay...  Among all those, satay is quite disappointing.  I like the kuay tew, spare rib soup pretty much.  The dishes priced from US$3-5.

Heritage Annex, Eastern & Oriental Hotel Penang

This historical building still takes on its charisma of the colonial George Town.  I'd prefer this annex (old wing) to the Victoria Annex (new wing).
