2010 Spring Review - Lord Jim's Mandarin Oriental BKK

Stock market again. Lord Jim's dropped at my recent visit. Hope this is a sudden technical drop. Among all the food below, I like som tam the most - green papaya salad (freshly made) (photo 4). Ironically Sala Rim Nam (Thai restaurant of MO BKK) didn't have freshly made som tam. Unfortunately the roast beef wasn't done right (rushing in a high heat roasting resulting in the outskirt overburnt and the inside under cooked; should be in slow low heat roasting). Kind of waste for this quality roast beef. The only things are still good - bread, mango and other fruit, foie gras.

That reminds me of the Roast Beef recipe from the Julia Child cookbook. Something she wrote was very funny. I will have to dig it out tonight and post later.

*remarks. Just found out I didn't write in more details on the roasting part. Amended in blue. Pixmation, remember that time we went to Ralph's for a frozen turkey and as we had no time, we spent 1.5 hours for roasting at high heat resulting in a "cartoon board paper" like meat texture. Should be at least in a 6-8 hour slow heat roasting. Look forward to the Julia's post. Thanks.

Android, I hope they should as Lord Jim's is loved by many MO fans and besides this restaurant name is so legendary with MO's history.

the MO doesn't make itself a legend, it is the management behind, the GM behind, obvious "drop, drop, drop, drop still counting" after former GM Kurt Wachtveitl retired (41 years with the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, he is the legend), so any hope MO-BKK will rebounce soon? no hope! not before the present GM get fired ..

anything that makes a hotel shines is not the brand, it is the GM and his team under his management

Since I did not know of the previous legendary GM so I cannot compare. But I am still very satisfied with the present one as compared to those same level hotels in the US.
So everything is relative.
It is harder to exceed if it is too good to begin with, just like this MO case.

I think I referred to the name of Lord Jim's. Remember I asked for trying those MO outlets asap.... :)
